Benton Community Food & Service Co-Op

Who We Are

The Co-Op idea was born from a conversation among Community Action Program, St Patrick Catholic Church (Oxford), St Charles Catholic Church (Otterbein), and Oxford United Methodist Church. These organizations believed there was a better way to help local families access the resources they need. Community Action Program is an organization whose mission is to empower communities, families, and individuals toward self-sufficiency by removing the causes and conditions of poverty through services, support, and education. It has grown from a small agency that began with a simple Head Start program to an agency that provides services in six counties and beyond. The types of services provided by CAPWI (Community Action Program, Inc of Western Indiana) include those such as Family Life, Housing, Financial Planning, Elder Adults, and Money Management. These are the values that set the foundation for their programs:

What We Offer

The Co-Op model allows adults to use their talents and abilities to provide for their families, choose what products their family needs, and helps members connect and build relationships. Our mission is to encourage individuals to be a part of their own journey to self-sufficiency.

In exchange for a monthly fee or scheduled volunteer service with the Co-Op (or other non-profit entity), members will have the ability to shop for their needs. We offer many of the items one would find in local grocery stores; bread, dairy products, pasta, cereal, toiletry products, canned fruits and vegetables, and much more. Members are also involved in making decisions about Co-Op operations.

Beyond the products offered, membership provides an opportunity to build friendships. The Co-Op community can be a support system for members, whether needing help on a job search, a lesson on couponing, or just good conversation.
